Questo pannello è di un importante pala d'altare portatile di cinque parti che è stato eventualmente commissionato dal corpo di governo della città di Siena. Insieme a Giotto, Simone era l'artista più famoso della sua giornata. La sua tecnica raffinata e i suoi poteri descrittivi, evidenti nell'espressione di sant'Andrea e nel modo in cui tiene il suo libro, furono ineguagliati in Europa e guadagnarono la lode e l'amicizia del poeta Petrarca (1304-1374).
