Uno dei Sette Dei Fortunati della Buona Fortuna, Daikoku è un dio popolare giapponese della ricchezza. Fu originariamente introdotto in Giappone come membro del pantheon buddista, ma insieme all'Ebisu, divenne ampiamente adorato nel primo periodo Edo come dio di successo e di felicità, in particolare tra mercanti e comunisti urbani. Shōhaku ha dipinto Daikoku con la testa coperta nel suo solito panno nero e le sue maniche rotolate, circa a oscillare il suo enorme pestle nel riso nel mortaio rotondo. Sta facendo mochi, una pasta di riso appiccicosa preparata come un piacere per celebrare il nuovo anno. La spazzola spontanea e brusca suggerisce che questo lavoro potrebbe essere stato creato impromptu, con l'artista circondato da onlookers in un incontro sociale.
