Apollinary Goravsky was a Belarusian-born Polish painter who was active mainly in St. Petersburg. He was born into an impoverished family of the Belarusian landed gentry and studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He graduated in 1854 with a gold medal and travelled throughout Europe, visiting Geneva, Paris, Rome, and Düsseldorf. He met Pavel Tretyakov and began a collaboration that would later be very beneficial to his career. He was awarded the title of 'Academician' and produced paintings of folk-life in Belarus and Ukraine. He occasionally taught drawing at the 'Society for the Encouragement of the Arts' and spent most of his time in Belarus at his estate near Kirilovich. He died in St. Petersburg in 1900.
