Frits Thaulow was a Norwegian Impressionist painter known for his naturalistic depictions of landscape. He was born on October 20, 1847, in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway to a wealthy chemist father and studied at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen from 1870-1872. Thaulow then went on to study with Hans Gude at the Baden School of Art in Karlsruhe until 1875. He was one of the earliest artists to paint in Skagen, a town in northern Jutland that became famous for its Skagen Painters. After his stay in Skagen, Thaulow returned to Norway and helped establish the first National Art Exhibit in 1882. Many of his works are held in museums around the world.
