Early Life and Career

Josef Albers

, a German-born American artist and educator, was born on March 19, 1888, in Bottrop, Westphalia, Germany. He grew up in a family of craftsmen and was exposed to the world of art from an early age. Albers worked as a schoolteacher in his hometown from 1908 to 1913 and later trained as an art teacher at Königliche Kunstschule in Berlin from 1913 to 1915.

Artistic Journey

Albers' artistic journey took him through various mediums, including printmaking, stained glass, and painting. In 1918, he received his first public commission, Rosa mystica ora pro nobis, a stained-glass window for a church in Essen. He later joined the faculty of the Bauhaus in 1922, teaching in the preliminary course 'Werklehre' of the department of design.
