Karl Wilhelm Hartung was a German sculptor born in Berlin in 1908. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts and became a professor there in 1945. Hartung was a prominent figure in the development of abstract sculpture in Germany after World War II. He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1955 and the Grand Cross of Merit in 1960. Hartung passed away in 1967.
