Mahmoud Sabri was an Iraqi painter born in Baghdad in 1927. He is considered one of the pioneers of Iraqi modern art and one of the pillars of modernism in Iraqi art. Sabri studied social sciences in England and received his diploma in 1949. He then studied art privately and became an active painter. Sabri trained at the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow in the early 1960s under the mentorship of Socialist Realist painter Aleksandr. He was an innovator in his artistic career, exploring Arab and European cultures, studying the history of painting, and creating his own style. Sabri's work has been featured in numerous key galleries and museums, including The Block Museum. He died in 2012.
