Maria Margarita Tafoya, also known as Margaret Tafoya, was born in Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico, on August 13, 1904. She was a Native American potter and matriarch of the Santa Clara Pueblo potters. Tafoya learned the art of making pottery from her mother, who in turn learned it from her own mother. Tafoya's work is characterized by its large size, fine polish, and intricate designs. She was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship in 1984 by the National Endowment for the Arts, which is the United States government's highest honor in the folk and traditional arts. Tafoya passed away on February 25, 2001.
