Venerable Master Hsing Yun was a Chinese Buddhist monk, teacher, and philanthropist. He was born in Ningbo, China in 1927 and entered a monastery near Nanjing at age twelve. In 1947, he graduated from Jiaoshan Buddhist College. He founded the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist monastic order and the layperson-based Buddha's Light International Association. He was a major proponent of Humanistic Buddhism and one of the most influential teachers of modern Taiwanese Buddhism. He was popularly referred to as one of the 'Four Heavenly Kings' of Taiwanese Buddhism, along with Master Sheng-yen of Dharma Drum Mountain, Master Cheng Yen of Tzu Chi and Master Wei Chueh of Chung Tai Shan. He passed away on February 5th, 2023 at age 97.
