Biografie:

Johannes Pauli (about 1455 – after 1530 at Thann in Alsace) was a German Franciscan writer. He was born in Pfettisheim and studied theology in Strasbourg. He joined the Franciscan order and became a popular preacher, teaching in various church institutions and preaching in different cities. Pauli is remembered for his work 'Schimpf und Ernst', a collection of 693 jests and moral anecdotes drawn from ancient and medieval sources and from oral tradition. His writings were widely read and influenced the Elizabethan era's Hundred Merry Tales.
