Thomas Mann (1875-1955) was a German novelist, short story writer, social critic, philanthropist, essayist, and the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate. He was born in Lübeck, Germany and died in 1955. He was a member of the Hanseatic Mann family and portrayed his family and class in his first novel, Buddenbrooks. He was known for his socio-political novels and his fierce criticism of the growing Fascism and Nazism forced him to flee Germany after the Nazis came to power during 1933. He was the elder brother of writer Heinrich Mann.
