, a Swiss artist, was born on May 2, 1806, in Chevilly, near Lausanne. After his parents' untimely death, Gleyre was raised by an uncle in Lyon, France. He began his artistic education under Bonnefond in Lyon before moving to Paris, where he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts under Hersent.
Gleyre's work is characterized by its Academicism and Orientalism. His travels with American traveler John Lowell Jr. to the eastern Mediterranean in 1834-1835 greatly influenced his style. This period is reflected in his works, such as The Apocalyptic Vision of St John (1840) and Evening (1843), which received a second-class medal.
