Eines der großen Gemälde, die Dali in dieser Ära fertig gestellt hat Die Entdeckung Amerikas von Christopher Columbus steht eine massive 14 Fuß groß um 9 Fuß breit. Das Gemälde wurde von Huntington Hartford, einem amerikanischen Geschäftsmann, der zum A&P-Supermarkt gehörte, für die Eröffnung seines Museums, Galerie der modernen Kunst, in New York in Auftrag gegeben. Das Museum befand sich auf dem Kolumbuskreis, daher die Inspiration für das Thema des Gemäldes. Als frommer römischer Katholik porträtierte Dali Columbus als christlicher Erlöser und brachte die wahre Kirche und das Heil in die neue Welt. Das Gemälde befindet sich jetzt im Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.
