Biografia:

Johan Thomas Lundbye

was a promising young Danish painter and graphic artist, known for his animal and landscape paintings who died at the age of 29. He was born on September 1, 1818, in Kalundborg, Denmark, to Joachim Theodor Lundbye and wife Catherine Bonnevie. Lundbye was sickly as a child and studied privately under animal painter Christian Holm. At the age of 14, he came into J. L. Lund’s drawing school and the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen, where he finished in 1842.

Early Work and Inspiration

Lundbye was artistically inspired by Niels Laurits Høyen's call to develop a Danish nationalistic art by exploring as motif the characteristic landscapes, the historical buildings and monuments, and the simple, rural people of Denmark. He became one of his generation’s national romantic painters, along with P. C. Skovgaard and Lorenz Frølich, to regularly depict the landscape of Zealand.

Notable Works

Some of Lundbye's notable works include Kolås Wood, Vejrhøj, which is currently housed at the National Gallery of Denmark. This oil on canvas painting measures 33 x 24 cm and showcases Lundbye's exceptional talent for depicting landscapes. Another notable work is An Evening beside Lake Arresø, which demonstrates his ability to capture the beauty of the Danish landscape.

Later Life and Death

Lundbye received a travel grant from the Royal Danish Academy of Art in 1845, which was renewed a year later. He traveled through Germany, Switzerland, and France, painting notable works such as Oxen in the Roman Campagne. However, his life was cut short when he died on April 25, 1848, at the age of 29.
