Biografia:
Bartolomeo Cesi was an Italian painter and draftsman of the Bolognese School. He was born in Bologna in 1556 and died in Tivoli in 1629. He made easel paintings as well as frescoes, and is known mainly for his religious paintings but also painted portraits and mythological scenes. He was influenced by the Counter Reformation's interest in education and the use of art as a vehicle for renewing faith and promoting the Roman Catholic creed. He was a member of the House of Cesi, a noble family of Umbrian origin. He was a pupil of Giovanni Francesco Bezzo and later collaborated with Ludovico Carracci and Prospero Fontana. He traveled to Rome and worked there with Scipione Pulzone. He completed a series of frescoes on the Passion of Christ for the Carthusian Monastery (Charterhouse) or San Girolamo in Bologna in 1595. He became the drawing master of the Accademia degli Ardenti in 1620. Alessandro Tiarini was his pupil. He made easel paintings as well as frescoes. He is known mainly for his religious paintings but is also known to have painted portraits. He made designs based on his studies from life. He was a member of the powerful Cesi family, on 18 Sep 1605 he was consecrated bishop by Bonifazio Caetani, Bishop of Cassano all'Jonio, with Pietro Francesco Montorio, Bishop of Nicastro, and Placido della Marra, Bishop of Melfi e Rapolla, serving as co-consecrator.
