Ben Pungowiyi is a Yupik artist from the village of Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska. He was raised by his grandfather who also was a carver and began carving at the age of six under his guidance. Ben specializes in creating intricate sculptures using walrus ivory and whalebone as his primary materials. Pungowiyi's work often depicts traditional Yupik themes such as animals, spirits, and cultural practices. His art has been exhibited across the United States and internationally, including at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., the Anchorage Museum in Alaska, and the British Museum in London. In addition to his artistic career, Ben is also an advocate for preserving Yupik culture and language. He has worked with various organizations to promote traditional knowledge and practices among younger generations of Yupik people.
