Early Years

Abbott's early life was marked by her interest in the arts. She attended The Ohio State University for two semesters but left in 1918 when her professor was dismissed due to his German teaching. She then moved to New York City, where she studied sculpture and painting. In 1921, she traveled to Paris, where she became an assistant to Man Ray, a renowned photographer.

Trip to Europe, Photography, and Poetry

Abbott's work in photography began in 1923 when she started working as a darkroom assistant at Man Ray's portrait studio in Montparnasse. She was impressed by her own work and decided to pursue photography as a career. Her first major works were exhibited in the Parisian gallery Le Sacre du Printemps. After a short time studying photography in Berlin, she returned to Paris and started a second studio on the rue Servandoni. Abbott's subjects included people from the artistic and literary worlds, such as Jean Cocteau, James Joyce, and others. Her work was exhibited with that of Man Ray, André Kertész, and others in Paris. She became interested in Eugène Atget's photographs, which she acquired after his death in 1927.

Changing New York

In early 1929, Abbott visited New York City with the goal of finding an American publisher for Atget's photographs. Upon seeing the city again, Abbott recognized its photographic potential and began to take pictures of the city's architecture and urban design. Her work on Atget's behalf would continue until her sale of the archive to the Museum of Modern Art in 1968. Some of her notable works include: Abbott's work can be seen in various museums, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
