C. Dakshinamoorthy, as a modern master, belongs to a generation of progressive artists of the late 1950s and the early 1960s in Madras (current Chennai), the artistic centre of South India. He was born in Gudiyatham in Vellore district in India in 1943 and passed away in Chennai in 2016. He was an integral part of the Madras Art Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, and a founding member of the Cholamandal Artists' Village. He was known for his stone sculptures and was referred to as the 'Stone Master'. His works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi and the Chennai Museum.
