Clara Birnberg, also known as Clare Winsten, was a British painter and sculptor born in Romania in 1892. She immigrated to England with her family around 1902 and became an important figure in the British art scene.
Winsten was a member of the Women’s Freedom League and was the only girl in the circle of Jewish painters known as the 'Whitechapel Boys'. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1910 to 1912, where she developed her skills as a painter and sculptor.
Winsten's artistic career was marked by her participation in various exhibitions, including the 1914 post-Impressionist exhibition Twentieth Century Art: A Review of Modern Movements at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. Her sculptures were also exhibited at the Toynbee Hall in Whitechapel and at the garden of George Bernard Shaw’s house in Ayot St Lawrence, Hertfordshire. Notable Works Some of Winsten's notable works include a bronze sculpture of George Bernard Shaw, which she produced in 1946.
