Jean Patou, also known as Jean-Alexandre Patou, was a French fashion designer and founder of the Jean Patou brand. He was born in Paris, France, in 1887, and died in 1936. Patou's family's business was tanning and furs. He opened his first dressmaking salon in 1912 and served as a captain in the Zouaves during World War I. After the war, he became known for eradicating the flapper look by lengthening the skirt and designing sportswear for women. He is considered the inventor of the knitted swimwear and the tennis skirt. He also popularized the cardigan and moved fashion towards the natural and comfortable. In the 1920s, he invented the 'designer tie' and designed the tennis wear for Suzanne Lenglen. He died in 1936 at the age of 48.
