Biografie:

William Charles Piguenit (27 August 1836 – 17 July 1914) was an Australian landscape painter. He was born in Hobart, Tasmania and spent most of his life working as an artist. Piguenit was one of the earliest professional painters born in Australia and was mainly self-taught, drawing his inspiration from European romanticism. He was an influential and widely exhibited late Colonial era Hobart and Sydney landscape painter, amateur photographer, draughtsman and explorer. Piguenit is best known for his paintings of the Tasmanian highland wilderness and is considered the first colonial-born artist in Van Diemen's Land. He began as a draughtsman's apprentice and later became a drawing master at the Hobart High School. Piguenit's work was widely exhibited in Australia and he was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy in London. He was also a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. Piguenit's work is held in many public and private collections, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria, the National Library of Australia, and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
