, a German-born Early Netherlandish painter, created Scenes from the Passion of Christ around 1470. This remarkable oil painting on Baltic oak features 23 vignettes of the Life of Christ in one narrative composition without a central dominating scene. The scenes include 19 episodes from the Passion, the Resurrection, and three later appearances of the risen Christ.
This masterpiece was commissioned by Tommaso Portinari, an Italian banker based in Bruges, who is depicted in a donor portrait kneeling and praying in the lower left corner with his wife, Maria Baroncelli, in a similar attitude in the lower right corner. The painting's original location is believed to be Portinari's chapel in the church of St Jacob in Bruges. It was not catalogued in Portinari's belongings when he died in 1501 and is thought to have been moved from Bruges to Florence between 1510 and 1520. The painting is now housed in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin, Italy.
The scenes start in the distance at the top left with Jesus's entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and pass through the town to the bottom left to the Mount of Olives for the Agony in the Garden. The painting then moves to the right side, where it depicts the arrest, trial, scourging, and crucifixion of Christ.
