Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) made a painting based on sketching and succeeded in establishing his new painting style. On the screen fully covered with gold leaf are three adults and two children in Chinese-style clothing. The man, far left, who has a long beard and dons a hood with his arms put behind him is said to be Tao Yuanming. The expressions of all depicted individuals were not based on those of any certain people, so the Chinese ideal of handsomeness can be recreated. Inside the house, a blank booklet and stationery are put on a desk covered by a fabric boasting a flower and crane pattern. At the lower-right part of the scroll is Okyo’s signature, while there are two square name seals below it.
