Julie Gough is an artist, writer and curator based in Tasmania, Australia. She was born in Melbourne in 1965 and has lived mostly in Hobart, Tasmania since late 1993. Gough completed a Bachelor of Arts in pre-history and anthropology at the University of Western Australia in 1986, a Diploma of Art at St Brigid's and Northbridge TAFE Colleges in Perth in 1989, and a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Curtin University in Perth in 1993. She completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of Art at the University of Tasmania in 1994, a Master's degree in Fine Arts at Goldsmiths College, University of London in 1998, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Fine Arts at the University of Tasmania in 2001. Gough's art practice often involves uncovering and representing conflicting and subsumed histories, often drawing from her family’s experiences as Tasmanian Aboriginal people. She is known for her sculptures and installations that challenge the dominant narratives of Australian history and identity.
