Captain William Mein Smith (1799-1883) was a British naval officer and colonial administrator. He served as the first Surveyor General of New Zealand from 1841 to 1842, and was responsible for the survey and mapping of the country's coastline and harbors. Smith was born in London, England, and joined the Royal Navy at a young age. He saw action in the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812, and rose to the rank of captain. In 1840, Smith was appointed as the Surveyor General of New Zealand, a position he held until 1842. During his tenure, he oversaw the survey of the country's coastline and harbors, and produced detailed maps that were used for navigation and settlement. Smith also played a role in the early development of the colony, serving as a member of the New Zealand Company and the New Zealand Constitution Committee. After leaving New Zealand, Smith returned to England, where he continued to serve in the Royal Navy until his retirement in 1863. He died in London in 1883.
