Charles Edenshaw

, a renowned Haida artist from Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, was born in 1839. His early life was marked by the influence of his family's lineage, with his father being K'łajangk'una of the Nikwən Qiwe lineage of the Raven moiety. Edenshaw's mother, Qawkúna, was from the Eagle moiety's Sdəłdás lineage, which he would later follow in the Haida matrilineal system.

Artistic Career

Edenshaw began his artistic journey at a young age, with his work ranging from argillite carving to precious metal craftsmanship. According to his daughter Florence Davidson, he started carving argillite and silver around the age of 14. His most productive period was between 1880 and 1910, during which he created an array of art pieces, including poles, masks, frontlets, chests, and feast dishes.
