Edenshaw's mother, Qawkúna, was from the Eagle moiety's Sdəłdás lineage, which he would later follow in the Haida matrilineal system.

Edenshaw began his artistic journey at a young age, with his work ranging from argillite carving to precious metal craftsmanship. According to his daughter Florence Davidson, he started carving argillite and silver around the age of 14.
