Ernst Willem Jan Bagelaar was a Dutch etcher. He was born on September 16, 1775, in Eindhoven and died on February 8, 1837, in Son. Bagelaar first entered the army but later developed an interest in fine arts, particularly etching. He traveled through Germany and Paris to further his knowledge of art. After giving up soldiering, he retired to his property at Zon near Eindhoven where he spent the rest of his life creating numerous etchings that were executed in imitation of drawings. Many of his works are landscapes from his own designs. Bagelaar was particularly influenced by the style of Jan Luyken and possessed a considerable collection of his drawings.
