Georg Christoph Grooth (aka Kleine Grooth) was born in Stuttgart, Germany, and was trained in Dresden. In 1741 he came to the Russian Empire, where he became one of the most prominent representatives of the rossika art, which is a pleiad of German artists who worked in Russia in the 18th century. He was known mainly for his work in imperial Russia, where he painted portraits of Elizabeth of Russia and Peter III of Russia. He was also a portraitist, decorator of palace interiors, and the Keeper of the Palace art galleries. He died in St. Petersburg in 1749.
