Johannes Stradanus (Jan van der Straet) was a Flemish artist born in Bruges, Belgium in 1523. He died in Florence, Italy in 1607. Also known as Johannes Portantius and Jan van der Straet, he is recognized for his contributions to the Mannerist style of art. Stradanus was a prolific artist who worked in various mediums including painting, printmaking, and drawing. He is best known for his series of prints depicting various trades and professions, which were widely popular during the Renaissance period. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Stradanus also served as the court artist for Cosimo I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany.
