Johann Esaias Nilson was born in 1721 in Augsburg, Germany. He died in 1788 after a life filled with a successful and illustrious career. The German printmaker's influence on the Rococo period's decorative arts earned him the name 'the German Tiepolo'. He was a major member of an Augsburg dynasty of engravers and the leading Augsburg artist of his day. Nilson was known for his pottery designs and Rococo engravings. He was also a painter and is known for his miniatures and portraits. Nilson was born of Swedish descent and began painting miniatures as early as 1742. He became painter to the elector palatine in 1761 and was director of the Augsburg Academy of Arts from 1764 to 1787. Nilson's works can be found in various museums, including the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
