Judith Cotton was born in Broken Hill, Australia and resides in Lyme, Connecticut. Raised in a deeply political household, Cotton removed herself from the turmoil of politics to pursue a career in art. She began exhibiting work in Canberra, Australia in 1968 and has had 24 solo shows in New York, Sydney, London, Hong Kong, and other major cities. Cotton's work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, and her paintings are held in the collections of major museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Phillips Collection. In 2002-2003, a ten-year survey of her work traveled in Australian museums. Cotton is also known for her writing, including her memoir 'Swimming Home' published in 2022.
