The Karuk are an indigenous people of California, located in the northwestern corner of the state, in the Klamath River basin of northwestern California. The Karuk Tribe is a federally recognized Indian tribe of Karuk people. The Karuk people speak the Karuk language, a language isolate. The name 'Karuk' means 'upriver people' or 'upstream people' in the Karuk language. The Karuk people have a rich cultural heritage, including traditional narratives, oral histories, and a strong connection to the land and water. The Karuk people have faced many challenges, including the disruption of their traditional cultural information systems as a result of Euro American contact in Karuk Ancestral Territory. However, the Karuk Tribe has an active language revitalization program and is working to preserve and promote their culture and traditions.
