Kitano Tsunetomi, born Shima Seiei in Sakai in 1892, was a prominent nihonga artist in Taishō and Shōwa Japan. He studied with Kitano Tsunetomi and Noda Kyūho, becoming an accomplished artist in the nihonga style. Kitano's works often depicted traditional Japanese themes, such as landscapes and female performers.

Early Life and Career

Kitano was born in Sakai, Japan, and began his artistic career at a young age. He studied with Kitano Tsunetomi and Noda Kyūho, learning the techniques of nihonga painting. In 1921, he married and moved to Manchuria in 1927, returning to Japan at the end of the war.

Awards and Recognition

Kitano was awarded certificates of commendation for his works, including Evening in Soemon-chō at the sixth Bunten exhibition in 1912, Festival Attire at the seventh Bunten, and Artlessness at the ninth Bunten. His self-portrait, Untitled, features a facial bruise that symbolizes the many abuses inflicted upon women by men.

Museums and Collections

Kitano's works can be found in various museums and collections, including the Musee de Toyama and the Museum of Modern Art Japan. The Musee de Toyama has a collection of over 15,000 works of art, ranging from paintings and sculptures to prints and photographs. The Museum of Modern Art Japan has a collection of over 13,000 works of art, spanning painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other media.

Kitano's works are also influenced by the Shin Hanga Art Movement, which emerged in early 20th-century Japan during the Taishō and Shōwa periods. This movement revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art, which had its roots in the Edo and Meiji periods. Kitano Tsunetomi's artistic style and contributions to the nihonga genre have made him a notable figure in Japanese art history. His works continue to be celebrated and exhibited in museums and collections around the world, including The Shin Hanga Art Movement and Kitano Tsunetomi.
