Louis August Ludwig Tannert was a German painter, art educator, and curator who had a significant career in South Australia. Born on October 28, 1831, in Düsseldorf, Germany, Tannert studied at the Düsseldorf school of painting and the Royal Academy of Dresden. He arrived in Melbourne on board the Kent on December 17, 1876, and began showing his works in the city, mostly genre paintings in the style of the Düsseldorf school of painting.
