Lapa graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon, where he later became a professor. In 1940, he joined the team of decorators for the Exposition of the World Portuguese, and that same year was awarded the Order of Christ. He collaborated with the Panorama magazine (a Portuguese art and tourism magazine) and took over the artistic direction of the Atlântico magazine in 1942. Lapa participated in several exhibitions, including the I Exhibition of Modern Illustrator Artists, S.P.N., in Porto in 1942, and was distinguished with the Domingos Sequeira Prize in 1947. He also worked on various projects, such as the collection of books 'Contemporâneos' and the magazine Diana, where he created a notable animal series. Lapa was a member of the founding nucleus of the Instituto de Arte, Decoração e Design (IADE) in Lisbon in 1969.
