Meisheng, also known as Ju Chao, was a renowned Chinese painter during the Qing dynasty. Born in Panyu (now part of Guangzhou) around 1811, Meisheng left his hometown to serve as secretary to Zhang Jingxiu in Guangxi during the Taiping Rebellion. After Zhang's retirement in 1856, he returned to Guangdong and taught painting at Zhang's estate while maintaining a quiet life of study and contemplation. Meisheng was known for his exquisite paintings, including Silkworm, an exquisite depiction of silk moths. His courtesy name was Meisheng (梅生), and pseudonym Meichao (梅巢) or Guquan. He wrote 'Poems of Shouxie Shi' (首邪室诗) and 'Yanyu Ci' (烟语词). As a painter, Meisheng's style was influenced by the traditional Chinese painting techniques of the Song and Yuan dynasties.
