Pilloo Pochkhanwala was born in 1923 in Bombay, India. She was one of India’s first few women sculptors. Pochkhanawala began her journey in the 1950’s and was never formally trained in art. She was among the first few women sculptors in India and initially worked in advertising before becoming a sculptor. Pilloo Pochkhanawala was a pioneering figure in the field of modern Indian sculpture and had a close and long-lasting relationship with the Gandhys. Her sculptures are known for their dynamic and expressive forms, and she worked with various materials such as steel, lead, and bronze. Pilloo Pochkhanawala passed away in 1986.
