Ricardo Balaca y Orejas-Canseco was a Spanish painter and illustrator born in Lisbon in 1844. He specialized in battle scenes and was the son of the painter José Balaca, who was in exile in Portugal for political reasons. Balaca began his artistic training in the family workshop and completed it at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, where he studied with Federico de Madrazo. He had his first exhibition at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1857, receiving honorable mention. Balaca is best known for his portrayals of battles in a Romantic style. He died in Madrid in 1880 at the age of 35.
