Ishikawa Jozan, also known as Shigeyuki Ishikawa, was a Japanese scholar, poet, calligrapher, and painter born in Mikawa, Japan in 1583. He passed away in 1672. Ishikawa Jozan was a former samurai who became a member of the literati in the early Edo period. He served in the siege of Osaka and assumed the sobriquet of 'Jozan' after the battle. In 1641, he built the hillside hermitage Shisendô (Hall of Poetry Immortals) in Kyoto and commissioned portraits of thirty Chinese poets, executed by Kanō Tan'yū. Ishikawa Jozan's retreat, Shisendô, remains popular among tourists of Kyoto. He was also known for his poetry and was deeply interested in neo-Confucianism. Ishikawa Jozan's works are highly regarded in Japan and he is considered an important figure in Japanese literature and art.
