Suhas Roy is a famous Bengali Painter born in 1936 in Bengal. He graduated in painting in 1958 from the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship, Kolkata. He travelled to Paris in 1965 on an exchange programme supported by the French government and studied graphic art & murals in Paris. In 1960 he became a member of Society of Contemporary Artists, Calcutta. From 1971 – 1973 he was the principle of Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship. Subsequently he became a lecturer in painting at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. Roy’s works are fixated with the female face and form and his characters are romanticised, dwelling the dreamlike world between sensuality and honesty. His work is usually inspired by life around him but his themes are as much influenced by the everyday world as they are rooted in fantasy. The vast and complex texture of life is seen as mystical and dark in his work. The mystical flavour of his works arose from his interpretations of the ‘unknown’. His works have been exhibited all over the world such as The Asian Graphic Prints Traveling Exhibition, USA, The Tokyo Print Biennale, Japan, France, Yugoslavia, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Hungry and the National Gallery of Modern Art- New Delhi, Jehangir Art Gallery- Mumbai and Lalit Kala Academy to name a few. He has also taken part in various Art camps organized in New Delhi and Calcutta. Suhas has been honored with several awards for his great achievements such as the Annual Exhibition at Indian College of Artists and Draftsmanship in 1958, The AIFACS Award in 1969 and Certificates of Birla Academy of Art and Culture, Kolkata in 1973 among others. He was the head of the Department of Painting at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata from 1986 to 1992. He was also the Dean of the Faculty of Visual Arts at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata from 1992 to 1995. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1992. He was also awarded the Lalit Kala Ratna by the Government of India in 2001. He was also awarded the Kalidas Samman by the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 2005. He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2011. He was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the Government of India in 2018.
