Vertis Nathaniel Hayes was an American painter and sculptor, born on April 18, 1904, in Atlanta, Georgia, and died on January 19, 1970, in Los Angeles, California. He was a highly regarded social realist painter and sculptor active during the Harlem Renaissance. Hayes was known for his easel and mural painting, sculpture, and teaching.
Hayes was born into a family of modest means and was largely self-taught as an artist. He studied with muralist Jean Charlot and took courses at the Art Students League in New York. His work was influenced by the American Scene Painting Art Movement, which emerged in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s.
Hayes's artistic style was characterized by his realistic depiction of American landscapes, cities, and rural areas. He often painted scenes of small-town life, including Main Streets, farms, and factories. His notable works include Juke Joint, which is held in the collection of the Georgia Museum of Art. This painting showcases Hayes's skillful portrayal of a serene natural scene.
