Wu Chi-zeng, also known as Wu Zetian, was an Empress regnant of China from 690 to 705. She was the first and only female emperor in the history of China. Wu was born in Lizhou, Tang China on 17 February 624 and died on 16 December 705 at the age of 81. She was the wife of Emperor Taizong of Tang and Emperor Gaozong of Tang, and the mother of Emperor Yizong, Emperor Zhongzong, and Emperor Ruizong. Wu was known for her political skills and her ability to maintain power in a male-dominated society. She was also a patron of the arts and literature, and made significant contributions to Chinese culture and society during her reign.
