Alakbar Rezaguliyev was an Azerbaijani artist known for his linocuts depicting the life, national traditions, and ordinary people of Azerbaijan. He was born on January 31, 1903, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Alakbar spent his childhood in the Old City of Baku, where he was surrounded by its beautiful architecture. He began his education at a Russian-Tatar school and later attended an art studio where he learned drawing and oil painting techniques from notable artists like M. N. Gerasimov and I. I. Edel. In 1925, Alakbar relocated to Moscow to study at the Higher Art and Technical Studios (Vkhutemas), where his mentors included famous graphic artists Y. A. Favorsky, S. Y. Gerasimov, M. Rodionov, A. D. Drevin, and D. P. Shterenberg. Alakbar was among the first to be arrested during Stalin's Repression in 1937 and spent more than 23 years of his life in exile. He was sentenced to six years in prison and later married a German girl named Berta while in Siberia. After his release, Alakbar became a prolific artist, creating an enormous body of work in the 1960s and early 1970s. His work does not fit the category of Socialist Realism as his women are not always depicted in admiration of their plight and heavy responsibilities.
