Alexei Petrovich Bogoliubov was a Russian landscape painter, born on March 16, 1824, in the Pomeranie village of Novgorod Gubernia. His father, Pyotr Gavriilovich Bogolyubov, was a retired colonel, and his maternal grandfather, Alexander Radishchev, was a well-known philosopher and social critic. In 1841, Alexey graduated from military school and served in the Russian Navy, traveling to many countries. He started attending classes at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts in 1849, where he studied under Maxim Vorobiev.
Bogolyubov was greatly influenced by Ivan Ayvazovsky, a Russian marine painter. In 1853, he finished the Academy with a major Gold medal. He retired as a navy officer and was appointed an artist to the Navy headquarters. From 1854 to 1860, he traveled around Europe, working prolifically. In Rome, he met Alexander Ivanov, who convinced him to focus more on drawing. In Düsseldorf, he took classes from Andreas Achenbach. In Paris, he admired the artists of the Barbizon School, including Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny.
Bogolyubov's paintings are characterized by their realism and romanticism. He is known for his numerous landscapes and seascapes, particularly his marine battle scenes. Some of his notable works can be found on Wikioo.org. He exhibited his works in the Imperial Academy of Arts and received the title of professor. In 1871, he was elected to the Imperial Academy of Arts.
Bogolyubov became close to the Wanderers art movement, participating in all their exhibitions. He became a member of their board but had reservations about their social ideas. In 1873, he left the Academy in solidarity with his fellow Itinerants. After 1873, Bogolyubov lived primarily in Paris due to his heart condition. His house was like a Russian colony, with frequent visitors including Ivan Turgenev, Ilia Repin, and Vasily Polenov.
