, an Italian painter, was born on February 23, 1818, in Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna. He trained with the landscape painters Prospero Minghetti and Vincenzo Carnevali. Fontanesi's early work involved creating theatre sets (1841-1846) and painting landscapes.
Fontanesi participated in various artistic exhibitions, showcasing his works in Lyon, Turin, Milan, Florence, Genoa, and the Triennial Exhibition of Fine Art in Bologna. In 1876, he was contracted by the Meiji government to introduce European oil painting techniques to Japan. As a foreign advisor at the Technical Fine Arts School (Kobu Bijutsu Gakko), Fontanesi taught charcoal, crayon, and oil paints to his Japanese students, including Asai Chū and Yamamoto Hosui.
Fontanesi's influence on modern Japanese yōga (Western-style) painting is significant. His romantic style, inspired by the French Barbizon school, can be seen in his works. Although his career in Japan was cut short due to illness, Fontanesi's impact on the development of Western-style painting in Japan remains.
