, a prominent Canadian-American artist, was born on October 10, 1858, in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. His twin sister, Lucy, and he were part of a family that operated a subarctic trading post. After the trading post failed, the family moved to Boston, where Prendergast grew up in the South End. He was apprenticed to a commercial artist as a youth, which conditioned him to the brightly colored, flat patterning effects characteristic of his mature work.
Prendergast's style was influenced by Boston Impressionist Childe Hassam. He studied in Paris from 1891 to 1895 at the Académie Colarossi with Gustave Courtois and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant, and at the Académie Julian. His ties to The Eight, a group of American artists, did not define his style, which was more aligned with Post-Impressionism.
* Maurice Brazil Prendergast's inventive watercolors of Venice are among his most appreciated works today. (Example: View Prendergast's Artworks at Wikioo.org) * He exhibited at the Macbeth Galleries in 1908 with The Eight, a group that included William Glackens, Robert Henri, and John French Sloan. * Prendergast's work was featured in the landmark Armory Show of 1913, presenting examples of his stylistic maturity.
Despite poor health, Prendergast continued to show in major exhibitions throughout his life. He remained a bachelor and became closely attached to his younger brother Charles Prendergast, also a post-impressionist painter. Prendergast's first New York memorial exhibition was held ten years after his death at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
