Pierre Du Val (1619-1683) was an important and prolific mapmaker who worked in Paris in the late seventeenth century. He was the nephew of Nicolas Sanson, regarded as the leading French mapmaker of the period, and studied under his guidance. Du Val was born in Abbeville, France, and began his cartographic career in Paris studying under his uncle. He was soon employed in editing and publishing maps, becoming one of the most influential and prolific mapmakers and publishers working in Paris in the third quarter of the seventeenth century. Du Val was named 'géographe ordinaire du Roy' in 1650 and produced several hundred maps and geographical works throughout his career. He is known for his contributions to French cartography and his role in the development of geographical knowledge during the seventeenth century.
