Prudenci Bertrana i Compte was a Spanish writer, critic, and painter born in Tordera, Spain in 1867 and died in Barcelona, Spain in 1941. He was the son of traditionalist landowners and his childhood was marked by the chronicles of his father's participation in the Third Carlist War and his love for nature.
He studied industrial engineering in Barcelona and later enrolled in the Escola de Estudis Artístics de la Llotja, where he professionalized his early interest in painting. After returning to Gerona, he lost his inheritance due to a series of legal disputes and had to work as a drawing teacher in the Escola de Artes y Oficios de Gerona.
In 1902, he began his literary career and published his first novel, Nàufrags, in 1907. He was involved in the cultural life of Gerona, especially in the organization of the Juegos Florales, and was the director of the newspaper Ciudadanía. He was imprisoned and prosecuted for one of his articles in favor of republican nationalism.
Some of his notable works include the trilogy Entre la terra i els núvols and the play Enyorada Solicitud. He also worked as a painting teacher in the Escola del Bosc del Ayuntamiento barcelonés. His works are characterized by their regenerationist and aesthetic tendencies.
