, a renowned Irish artist, was born on November 27, 1878, in Stillorgan, County Dublin. He was the fourth and youngest son of Arthur Herbert Orpen, a solicitor, and Anne Caulfield, an amateur painter. Orpen's early life was marked by a happy childhood at Oriel, a large house with extensive grounds. Orpen's artistic talent was evident from a young age. At 13, he enrolled in the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, where he won every major prize and the British Isles gold medal for life drawing. He later studied at the Slade School of Art between 1897 and 1899, mastering oil painting and experimenting with various techniques.
Orpen's artistic career was marked by his fine draughtsmanship and commercially successful portraits of the well-to-do in Edwardian society. However, many of his most striking paintings are self-portraits. During World War I, he was the most prolific official artist, producing 138 drawings and paintings, which he donated to the British government and are now part of the Imperial War Museum's collection.
