Johannes Knud Ove Jais-Nielsen, a Danish painter, designer, and ceramist, is best known for his religious figure groups designed for the Royal Copenhagen pottery. Born on April 23, 1885, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Nielsen's artistic career was marked by his unique style, which blended Cubism with Futurism.
Nielsen studied painting at the Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler under Kristian Zahrtmann and Johan Rohde. However, he abandoned the academic style in favor of modern art, which he encountered during his study trips to Berlin (1909) and Paris (1911-1914). His art was influenced by Cubism, and his paintings developed angular lines and fragmentation, as seen in his early masterpiece Afgang (Departure). Nielsen's work also showed a tendency towards Futurism, with figures in motion representing a wide range of subjects, including the circus.
Nielsen created sculptures in the Cubist style from 1915. From 1921 to 1928, he was employed as a sculptor by the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory, producing a series of ceramic sculptures on Biblical subjects, including The Good Samaritan and several versions of Jacob wrestling with the Angel. His sculptures were widely applauded, and for a time, their fame overshadowed that of his paintings. Some of his notable works include Circus Performance. Acrobats (1916), which depicts trapeze artists soaring weightlessly through the air.
Nielsen was awarded the Eckersberg Medal in 1929 and the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1948. His work has been exhibited at various museums, including the National Art Museum of Denmark, the National Gallery of Norway in Oslo, and the Museum Lolland-Falster in Maribo, Denmark. In 1986, an exhibition of his ceramics was held at Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen.
